At Baobab International Support Foundation, female microcredit recipients reported being considerably more empowered, particularly in terms of “social responsibilities and living conditions” and “cultural participation and rights”. The positive effects were most significant among women who used the microcredit to support income-generating activities, such as microenterprises, and women’s access to microcredit does increase their likelihood of being entrepreneurs, but to a much lesser degree than for the men in their household. However, women can only benefit from increased empowerment through entrepreneurship if they are given access to credit.
